What’s in a name?

Domain name that is.  Apparently Al Gore wants to set up a new domain for ecologically friendly companies and organisations by creating a .eco domain.

Got me thinking about all the Dots that end the email addresses I use.  Those with .com and .co.uk are so wonderfully anonymous that you can’t always be sure where you’ll end up when you click a link in Google – and some sites I wish I hadn’t clicked on!

However, when it is a .ac.uk or .gov.uk you pretty well know where you are going. Perhaps all companies should forewarn visitors of the agenda by using sector appropriate Dots. For example, EML would take on eml.pr.uk.  The police could be met.pol.uk and supermarkets sainburys.food.uk.  That way we would also know which country we were dealing with rather than åseeing something interesting and relevant and then realising it is on the other side of the Pond.

I see it as yet another ‘green’ bandwagon for companies to jump on.  Also, who is going to check that users have truly ecological credentials?
