Top tips for (tech PR) interns

PR careers

Breaking into the world of tech public relations (PR) is tough. Internships are one of the best ways to get a foot in the door—yet they’re often surrounded by controversy. Some see them as unpaid labour or reserved for the well-connected. But for most students and graduates, a PR internship is still the most direct route into a competitive industry.

Having been lucky enough to land an internship at tech PR agency Wildfire, here are my top tips for making the most of the opportunity.

1. Get Stuck In and Show Initiative

When you first start, there may be moments where work is slow. Don’t just sit back—go looking for tasks. Offer help across different teams, volunteer for projects, and show enthusiasm.

Why it matters: Agencies value interns who demonstrate curiosity and initiative. PR today spans everything from media relations and social strategy to AI-powered content creation. The more you try, the more skills you’ll leave with.

2. Ask Questions—Lots of Them

Never be afraid to ask for clarification. Your colleagues would much rather answer a question than see you struggle in silence.

The reality: The pace of PR is fast. With tools like HubSpot, AI content assistants, and data-driven reporting, no one expects you to know it all on day one. Asking questions proves you’re engaged and eager to learn.

3. Mistakes Happen—Learn and Move On

As an intern, you won’t have all the answers. Mistakes are inevitable. What matters is how you respond. Own it, learn from it, and don’t repeat it.

Why employers value this: PR is about problem-solving under pressure. Showing resilience and accountability demonstrates a professional mindset.

4. Don’t Be Afraid to Say No

Once colleagues see you’re capable, the workload can pile up. It’s better to be honest if you can’t take on another task than to overpromise and underdeliver.

In agency life: Prioritisation is key. Learning to manage expectations and communicate clearly is just as important as the work itself.

5. Work Hard, Play Hard—Network and Integrate

PR is as much about people as it is about press coverage. Make time to get to know your colleagues socially, attend industry events, and build your network.

Why this matters long-term: Many PR careers are built on connections. By integrating into the agency culture, you’ll make your internship more rewarding—and you’ll stand out when job opportunities arise.
